Angie Barnard of the Painted Turtle Guesthouse has signed up as a volunteer presenter for Junior Achievement, the world’s largest not-for-profit organization dedicated to educating young people about business. “This is an excellent opportunity for me to pass on my entrepreneurial knowledge while tapping into the energy and creative minds of savvy high-school students. Tourism Vancouver Island (TAVI), our region’s destination marketing organization, has launched a brand new position headed up by TAVI’s own Merv Jeffries. Amongst other things, Merv will gather market intelligence through research projects conducted within the region, and coordinate training and development programs that will build capacity within the tourism industry in the region. Nanaimo's very own home grown body painting phenomena - Body Gras! has been given official sanctioning by the World Body Painting Association, headquartered in Seeboden Austria. On September 5 and 6th, 2008 Body Gras! will be known as the Canadian Body Painting Festival, guaranteed to be the biggest and best body painting extravaganza in the country. The 2-day Festival will also offer workshops on photography, airbrushing, cosmetics, and esthetics.
Expecting over 2,000 in attendance and an estimated 500 hotel and motel rooms to be filled creating a destination event. "This is an event I hope the whole community benefits from - arts and culture, to our tourism industry to our local businesses," said organizer Dawn Tyndall. "It is really exciting to beat out other cities such as Calgary and Whistler for this event."
