Keep your eyes peeled for our own Angie Barnard, appearing soon on ShawTV. Angie recently received the honour of being featured in the book: “New Pioneers, Stories of 100 BC Women Entrepreneurs”. To download a pdf version of the New Pioneers, please Click here (this is a low resolution, but quite large file so it will not be suitable for high quality printing and may take a few minutes to download). Once you have read the book, please fill out a quick survey from the Women’s Enterprise Centre and be entered into a draw to win a $300 spa voucher. Time to pamper yourself!
The Painted Turtle will soon become certified as a multilingual business, as it participates in the Bonjour Nanaimo Campaign. The aim of this initiative is to provide customer service in French in order to attract national and international French-speaking markets before, during and after the Vancouver/Whistler Winter Olympics in 2010. This means that French-speaking travelers will receive French documentation on-site, as well as being served in French during high season or on request. Tres chouette! (very cool!)

The Painted Turtle was recently featured in More Living Magazine, along with other downtown businesses, in an article documenting how Nanaimo has changed in the past seven years. Seven years ago there was no Dragon Boat Festival, Summertime Blues Festival, or Half-Marathon. There was no Gallery 223, Vancouver Island Conference Centre, or Old City Station Pub. Most importantly, there was also no Painted Turtle Guesthouse! We have come a long way since our inception in 2004, and continue to contribute to the positive growth of our beautiful city.
Here at the Guesthouse, we welcome guests who travel to us via bus, ferry, floatplane, and car. Here’s another to add to the list: train! The Island Rail Corridor is a revitalization campaign currently underway to improve rail access across Vancouver Island. The BC government has already allocated $500,000 in funds to conduct research on upgrading the outdated E&N railway system for freight and commuter services on Vancouver Island. The Painted Turtle promotes the development of the corridor as a means of sustainable transport for travelers AND as an unforgettable travel experience.
Tourism Vancouver Island has finished work on the 2008 Vancouver Island Exit Survey; a year-long project partly funded by Service Canada and partnered with Tourism BC, BC Ferries Corporation and Vancouver Island University. Over 4000 visitors took part in the survey with around 2300 completed questionnaires which has been analyzed and is available for downloading here. This is the first exit survey of its kind in the Province since 1996 providing the Vancouver Island region with valuable market information which will be shared with the project partners and regions stakeholders.
The City of Nanaimo is gathering information regarding potential for a passenger ferry service between Nanaimo and Vancouver. The information collected from this survey will be available to investors interested in this business opportunity and will also be made public. The deadline for completing the survey is March 16, 2009. Please take 2-3 minutes to complete the online survey.
Get back to your aquatic roots with a special winter eco-tour off Nanaimo’s coastal areas. Diver’s Choice Charters will cater to your needs and offer a hot meal as part of the tour as well as expert advice on local ecosystems. “We were only 5 metres away from groups of sea lions and seals, more than once!” – Painted Turtle guests have commented. This unique opportunity is a MUST-DO activity during your winter stay in Nanaimo.
